Exam Information

The Royal Academy of Dance
The RAD is a leading international dance examination board specializing in Classical Ballet. The RAD was initially formed with the objective of improving the standard of Classical Ballet training in the UK. It has since grown to become one of the world’s leading dance education and training organizations; the examination syllabus is taught to more than a quarter of a million students worldwide. The RAD is a validated dance awarding body of the Council for Dance Education and Training. The RAD also works in partnership with the International Dance Teachers' Association.

All our teachers are fully qualified and registered with the Royal Academy of Dance. They are therefore entitled to enter pupils for RAD Examinations and Presentation classes.

Annual Children's Examinations – RAD Presentation Classes and Examinations, RAD Upper Grades, Vocational Grades

At La Sylvaine and Wendy Bell Schools, we aim to educate children, in the broad sense of the term. Any examination of Dance, Drama or Music has a pedagogical goal infinitely more profound than getting a piece of paper. Very few children are born with exceptional potential that will enable their parents and teachers to consider them for a career in dance. Children with such potential will be directed towards the Royal Ballet School or vocational schools. For many young children the enjoyment of their class is sufficient. For children from the age of 8, the goal of an examination provides the incentive to further effort, and the achievement of a reward for hard work. The RAD Examinations and Presentation Classes are not compulsory to progress from one level to the next until Grade 6. But they help to measure progress and level of achievement.

When preparing for an examination pupils must attend two ballet classes per week.
